Style Files: March '10 Men

Spring is finally here, which means it’s time to update those dark, winter wardrobes with new, fresh looks for the season. For a quick update to your look without blowing the bank, remember that the key is color and sharp, smart accessories. Read on for the latest looks in men's fashion this season.

1) Denim. Denim trends for men haven't changed much within the past few years, but the washes that are most popular do change season by season; for Spring and Summer, lighter washes are most popular, but darker rinses can also be worn at night.

Quickly and easily update your denim look by cuffing (or rolling) the hem at the bottom. For the most flattering look, roll the hem twice, with a cuff about one and a half inches in width. The cuff doesn't need to be crisp and neat - a "casually" rolled cuff (as on the models below) was the popular look on the runways this season.

2) Color. Colors for men's fashion almost always fall along the same lines as women's fashion, and this season is no exception. Look for shirts, ties, and accessories in pale yellow, a variety of greens (from pale to dark forest green), blue (light and dark, such as navy), indigo, brown, and light gray.

3) Suits. Suiting trends for men this Spring continue the trends of the past few seasons in that finer tailoring and classic fabrics and patterns still rule. Update your suit with shirts, ties, and/or pocket squares (see below) in the latest colors and patterns. Pair a white suit jacket over light, stone-washed jeans with a pastel button front and a skinny tie for a fresh Spring look that’s perfect for the weekend.

4) New-Wave Boat Shoes. Instead of your tried-and-true sneakers and kicks, try a pair of boat shoes on for size this Spring to go with your casual weekend attire of t-shirt and jeans. Coming in a wide variety of colors, the boat shoes popular this Spring perfectly combine comfort with easy style. A true kickback to the ‘80’s, these new versions come in more than just your standard brown, with colors ranging from yellow to green, to orange and pink.

5) Accessories. Accessories for Spring include fresh updates of familiar classics, such as plastic aviators and pocket squares with prints in the latest Spring colors and patterns. A few simple accessories can go a long way in updating and maximizing your wardrobe!

a) Patterned pocket squares. Accessorize your suit jacket with patterned pocket squares in a variety of colors this Spring to add a punchy kick that instantly brightens your look. Patterns popular this season include plaid, gingham, stripes, and checks. Pair with a solid-colored shirt to prevent pattern overkill.

b) Plastic aviators. This latest new eyewear style is proof that what's old is new again - this season, pick up a pair of plastic aviators, a fresh update on an old classic. They come in a variety of colors, including black, gray, brown, tortoise shell, and more. This cool accessory gives instant, easy style to any outfit, and looks good for both dressy occasions and casual weekends. (Pair one with a white blazer, jeans, and a tee for an instantly cool, vacation-ready look.)

c) Watches. Instead of your basic black, white, or gunmetal gray this Spring, pick up a watch with a colored face to add some attitude and personality to an otherwise tame work outfit, or to anything else. The latest timepieces this season have a kick that your traditionally-colored watches won't, and will give you an excuse to show them off anytime someone asks what time it is.
